THE RANKIN BROTHERS - Best New Show 2008!

On 23 November 2008, Chad Ray and six Branson Critics staff members joined an enthusiastic audience at the Welk Resort Theatre to see the evening performance of the Rankin Brothers Show.  Mid way through the first half, the show was stopped and Chad Ray was invited to the stage.  Chad explained to the audience briefly what Branson Critic is and the process for selecting award winners.  Chad was ill that night so Velva Cort, editor, accompanied him to the stage to handle the award.  Then Chad announced the Rankin Brothers Show as the winner of the Branson Critic Editors’ Choice Award for Best New Show 2008.   Chris Cathcart, producer, and Matt & Mark Rankin were on stage to accept the award.  Velva passed the award to Mark and the cheers started erupting, first from the band, and then the entire audience.  Everyone present was excited to see this talented group of entertainers, managers, producers, and technicians, recognized for all the work they put into presenting this top-notch award-winning show.

Following are some of the fan and editor quotes Chad cited during the award presentation:“The Rankin Brothers show speaks to people of all ages as they take you on a journey of classic music.  Mark and Matt have stage presence that is remarkably out of this world, and they definitely strive to perform their best, ultimately becoming unsurpassed.”  Ilovemycountry“We were blown away by these two guys the moment they walked out on stage and when they opened their mouths we realized why.  These two young men put their hearts and soul into each song and connect with the audience on a whole lot deeper level than just entertaining.  They know just which songs to sing, how to sing them, and how to reach out and touch people with them.  They belong in a class of singers very few ever attain.”

John and Carolyn Dirks
“Overall, this is one of the best shows Branson has to offer.  At the end of the show, we were all shouting “Rankin! Rankin! Rankin!”  Trust me, we wouldn’t do that for any old show.”  J-bird

Editors Quotes:
“The combination of exceptionally talented brothers, the backup vocals of the beautiful and talented Rankinettes, and the assembly of superb musicians makes the Rankin Brothers Show the best new entertainment in Branson.”  Bob and Velva Cort, Editors

“After speaking with them for just a few minutes after the show, you feel so comfortable around them, it’s like talking to a friend or a favorite cousin.  They are so down to earth and genuine…a quality that’s rare in many performers…”

TONY ROI & THE ELVIS EXPERIENCE-BEST SELF-NAMED SHOW & ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR!

And the winner is……….Tony Roi!! Music City Centre was rocking on the afternoon of November 20, 2008 as Branson Critic representatives converged on the Tony Roi & the Elvis Experience Show to present awards to the only show to receive two awards in 2008 – one for Best Self-Named Show and one for the prestigious Entertainer of the Year!

Another outstanding season of being entertained “Tony style” rallied both Elvis and Tony fans to vote Tony and his fantastic cast and crew to the top of Branson Critic’s 2008 Awards recipient list.

An amazing first half included both Elvis and Tony song favorites, and had the fans applauding, screaming and repeatedly standing in ovation for Tony, his lovely Angel Singers, and his TR Powerhouse Band.

As halftime neared, Tony talked a little about his career and how he came to be in Branson.  He told about his strong desire to grow as an artist which eventually led him to having his own show and putting together his “backbone” – his band – as he asked everyone to applaud his magnificent musicians and singers and thanked them for all their hard work.  Tony also thanked everyone for coming to see his shows, saying that it is the best form of advertising when the people like a show, and then tell others about it.  He said he takes the many awards he and the band have received very seriously, and regards them as a highest form of compliment for his/their work.

At this point, Patrick Haygood surprised everyone by coming onstage and introducing Branson Critic representative, Chad Ray, to present the awards.  Chad informed the audience what Branson Critic Online Magazine is all about and then read the following comments sent in by Tony’s fans:

“A young female fan wrote:
Tony Roi, have you seen him?  If not, what are you a waiting for?  He’s hot, he’s talented, he’s good looking - and he’s waiting for you in Branson at the beautiful Music City Center!

Tony’s shows are such high energy shows that they always are sure to have you sitting on the edge of your seat!  His show is the very best in Branson.  Once you go the first time he’s like a Lay’s potato chip…….no one can see just one show!  You will have to come back for more and more and more …. check Tony out if you haven’t……..he’s the best in Branson.  Taylor Mitcham”

Continuing with the “food” topic, Chad included the following review:

“There are two main food groups, fried and chocolate.  My over indulgence of my favorite food groups is avidly attested to by the past ponderous protuberance over my belt.  But I’ve discovered that there is something I’d rather do than sit down to a plate of fried anything or chocolate anything, and it doesn’t have fat, sugar, carbs, or calories, or cholesterol….that’s to have a heaping helping of Tony Roi doing “The Elvis Experience.”

Tony is a gourmet meal at a restaurant I can’t afford - with a bottle of Napoleon Brandy to top things off!  I can’t afford the meal, but I can afford Tony and it’s the best buy for my money I can find anywhere!

And those side dishes like the Angel Singers (and I do mean dishes), the Powerhouse Band (Dino ain’t no dish, but he can play those drums) really make for pleasure that’s a lot better than anything fried or chocolate!  Tony Roi is a diet I can stick with!  John Dirks”

Everyone seemed to enjoy the creativeness in these two reviews, including Tony, who earlier made reference to the many buffets in Branson, and had joked about letting the show out in time for those who wanted to get in line before the food got cold!

Then on a more serious note, Chad read:

“Tony Roi gives his all.  He brings The Elvis Experience to anyone who is curious to see the show for the first time - or for fans who have seen the show many times before.  Whatever the reason for being there, the mystery is the same for everyone.  His performances are intriguing - a combination of sounds of music and/or expressions of passion that come from his heart and soul.  His performances touch my soul and to hear Tony sing is truly an experience.    Arlene (from Wisconsin)”

“The first time I laid eyes on Tony Roi was nearly 4 years ago – I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me – then I thought my ears were playing tricks on me.  I soon learned that there were no tricks involved, only God-given talent to be seen and heard through an amazing tribute artist named Tony Roi.

The TR Powerhouse Band is unbeatable – you will see that each of them is phenomenally talented.  And the beautiful Angel Singers are absolutely outstanding singing backup for Tony.

Tony Roi’s Elvis Experience lives up to its name – it is a tribute to Elvis Presley, yes, but Tony Roi has made this show his own.

Tony’s loyal fans all agree that when you first go to see his show, you GO because of Elvis, but you GO BACK because of Tony!  Shirley Hendricks”

Chad then presented the first award for Best Self-Named Show 2008 to Tony Roi & the Elvis Experience Show!

Tony accepted the award as the audience clapped and cheered.  Subsequently, Chad told everyone, “but wait, there’s more!” as he continued with the second presentation by reading the following quotes:

“At the turn of the new millennium, TV Guide named Elvis Presley as the Entertainer of the Century.  Tony is the best, he is backed by the best, and just as Elvis deserved to be honored as the Entertainer of the Century, Tony Roi, with his outstanding, unforgettable tribute to the King, deserves the award for Entertainer of the Year in Branson.  Shirley Hendricks”
“When it comes to Entertainer of the Year, I can only vote for one, and that’s Tony Roi.  Tony has a very special gift, and an amazing talent.  Each show is just as remarkable and sensational as the ones before.  In fact, they just keep getting better.

“The Elvis Experience” is not just another Elvis impersonator; it’s the most magical two hours………magic that touches the heart and soul.  Magic that fills the theater, even before Tony steps onto the stage.  There are always fans that line the first few rows with the excitement of little kids, waiting for Christmas morning.  From the moment Tony appears, the excitement and screams can be heard and felt by everyone.

There is a special unique connection that Tony creates with his audience…..there’s an overwhelming feeling of love that comes from the stage.  It is so easy to see that Tony really loves what he does and loves sharing it with others.  His joy is to see joy in those he performs for…..and he makes everyone feel special.  Linda, Ut”

Without further adieu, the award for “Entertainer of the Year 2008” was presented to Tony as everyone in the theater stood in approval.  Tony’s lovely wife, Melanie, joined him onstage and after much applause, Tony said the following: “On behalf of my band, family, and management, thank you all!  I really do appreciate everything that I’ve been blessed with and I thank our Lord Jesus for that, and I thank everyone for their love and support.  We’re very much looking forward to next year in our new theater with the Haygoods, Red, Hot, and Blue, and Cassandre, and we hope to see everyone there – it’s going to be spectacular!”

After picture taking time, the stage was lit with beautiful Christmas lights as Tony and the band treated everyone to a very special second half filled with wonderful Christmas music.  Angel Singer, Stephanie McKinney, also graced the stage performing several classic Christmas solos.

It seemed the two hours flew by in only an instant as the music of Elvis Presley and that of Tony Roi brought smiles to everyone’s faces and joy to everyone’s hearts.  As usual, many comments were heard as we were leaving the show…“That was reeaally good!” or, “Wow, he was great – what a performer!”  One newcomer to the show from Colorado commented how glad he was to have chosen the show before returning home, too.  And yet another young fan was heard asking, “When can we come again, Mom?”

On behalf of everyone at Branson Critic Online Magazine, congratulations to everyone at the Tony Roi & the Elvis Experience Show and to Branson Critic’s ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR 2008 – TONY ROI!

I know everyone will be waiting anxiously for the start of the 2009 season, and we wish the entire lineup of shows continued success in their new location!

Before presenting the award, Chad read the following editor quotes:

“These guys can do it all; classic & new country, bluegrass, rock, pop, gospel, and more.  From the driving rhythms that keep your toes tapping to the smooth, mellow sounds of a lonely steel guitar or fiddle, the musicians of the Grand Band are experts in their art and they blend together to produce the sweetest music around the Ozarks.

Award winning Danny Yancey is the music director and expertly plays the pedal steel, banjo, and rhythm guitar.  Danny is endorsed by the Gibson Banjo Company and in this show you can see why.

Matt Hanshaw plays lead guitar with a vengeance and he does some flattop picking in the bluegrass segment that the audience just can’t watch fast enough.

Robbie Blackwood lives behind his drums; he plays 3 shows a day at the Grand Country Music Hall, and then again on the live Branson Country USA radio show on Friday nights.  He is fun to watch as his solid driving beat is precise, moving, and colorful with the occasional twirling drumsticks.

Larry Allred’s light-hearted personality would make you think he doesn’t take his musicianship seriously.  Wrong.  Larry is very serious about his bass playing.  He is as much into the tempo of the music as the drummer and if you watch closely, you can see him coordinate with the others by eye contact and body gestures.

Wayne Massengale is a master on the fiddle and a veteran entertainer and gets the crowd into his music every time he is featured.  Not only is Wayne expert on the fiddle for bluegrass and country numbers, he also provides the smooth violin sound for more classical songs
The piano/keyboard sounds come from Michael W. Davis.  When you watch him play the piano you immediately see, as well as hear, the musical talent.  He is all over that keyboard like he was born with it.   Bob Cort, Editor”

“Collectively, they are aptly-named, because they ARE the Grand(est) Band in Branson.  When you hear them, you just need to grab ahold and hang on for the ride, because they know their music.  They can play anything and everything from mega-speed hand-clapping, foot-stomping numbers (like the fastest version of “Orange Blossom Special”) to the slower-tempo rhythmic songs, from rock & roll to ballads.

Each member is an integral part of this band.  Wayne Massengale is one of the best, if not the best, fiddle player I’ve ever heard.  He sets the place afire whenever he plays (like in, “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”).  The steel guitar player (Danny Yancey) is also amazing!

They all do a supreme job, whether they are backing New South (and other vocalists) or whether they get to take the spotlight.  As I said, they KNOW their music and they KNOW how to deliver it!   Kathy Bennett, Editor”

Larry Allred accepted the award on the band’s behalf.  Jamie Haage thanked the Editors at Branson Critic for the award and stated what a well-deserved and incredible honor it was for each member of the band.

The show continued with amazing performances by guests Jackie Brown, New South Quartet, Stephanie McKinney, and Tony Roi (from Tony Roi & the Elvis Experience Show).  Some comedic fun was also thrown into the mix as Trey Wilson, too, appeared as Elvis, while the cloggers were brought onstage - quite a combination that had everyone in stitches!

Branson Country USA is always fun and exciting as they feature incredibly talented guests from various Branson area shows.  Branson Critic was excited to have made a little history of its own by having one of our awards presented while “ON THE AIR” during Branson Country USA!  Thank you Mike, Jamie, and the members of Grand Band for making it possible!!

Be sure and catch the fabulous Grand Band performing year round with the Grand Jubilee Show at the Grand Country Music Hall!

JOHN DENVER TRIBUTE - Best Morning Show!

Five Branson Critic staff members attended James Garrett’s John Denver Tribute Show on 18 November 2008.  Following an enjoyable first half of classic John Denver music, James invited Chad Ray to the stage.  Representing all of the fans who participated in the 2008 nomination/voting process and the Branson Critic editorial staff, Chad explained the award selection process to the audience.  He then invited IMAX owner, Paul Bluto, and the rest of the IMAX management team, and all of the show cast members to the stage.  After sharing several quotes written by fans who love this show Chad presented the Best Morning Show Award to the John Denver Tribute Show for the second consecutive year.

Here are a couple of the quotes that Chad read:

“How wonderful it is that James Garrett magnificently keeps the memory and spirit of John Denver alive.  James has often said that “John’s music was simple and profound at the same time.”  Those words precisely describe this amazing morning show.

“Rick Quincey has returned to the show after injuries received in an auto accident kept him off stage for three months.  It’s great to hear him playing “Sweet Georgia Brown” on the hammered dulcimer and singing Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” again.

“Jim Glaspy’s ability to play the dobro, guitar, banjo, and sing harmony is beyond fantastic!

“Randy Plummer continues to smile and delight audiences with his inspired bass playing and inspiring gospel songs.  Also, Randy is the best “Eefer” in Branson!

“Add James Garrett and you have the incredibly talented, smallest band in Branson!  His presentation of the Denver songs is masterful and heartfelt.  John smiles down from heaven every time James sings his songs.”

—————

“James Garrett and the John Denver Tribute Show is truly a unique breath of fresh air.  James and his band honor John Denver’s memory in a different and unique way for each show.  It’s glaringly apparent they possess a true appreciation and love for John Denver’s legacy in music.

“If you only have a casual interest in John Denver’s music, you will still be entertained by Randy Plummer, Rick Quincey, Jim Glaspy, and Kasi Means & C J Newsome’s beautiful vocals, and you have a show that is a “must-see” in Branson.

“The ‘smallest theater in Branson’, the IMAX Little Opry theatre, is an exceptional venue for John Denver’s music.  John (Denver) is certainly there in spirit, and if he were there in body, he would be pleased with the choice.”

In accepting the award, James said it was awesome to win again this year and thanked Branson Critic, the fans who voted, and his audience members who help make the show a success.

THE HAYGOODS! Best Show Family 2008!

On Wednesday, November 19th, Music City Center was filled to the balcony level as the Best Show Family hit the stage at 3:00pm.  The first half showcased the seven brothers and one sister as they all took turns singing and playing their different instruments.   Many of the sets included fantastic choreography and delightful shenanigans from the siblings as well.

After intermission, Chad Ray presented the award for Best Show Family 2008.  He read the following fan quotes:

“From beginning to end, you will be coming out of your seat with excitement!  This family of 7 brothers and 1 sister family are overflowing with pure talent and energy.  The show is unmatched in entertainment.  You will enjoy violin, guitar, drums, piano, harp, (to name a few), along with unparalleled dancing, tap, gymnastics, and of course singing.  You will leave feeling GREAT and knowing you definitely got more than your moneys worth.    Sasha”

“The Haygoods – wow!  They are such a dynamic family, that it’s almost hard to put into enough words to cover all their abilities.  Each one of them brings something different to the show, on and off the stage.

Tim is incredible.  He does all the behind the scenes work - managing the theatre this year, too.  He puts a lot of hard work and dedication into their show.  The family would not be where they are today without him.

Patrick comes next in the line…..and does a fantastic job.  Patrick has so much energy for life, and for music, and it shines though when he sings.  He is one of the best performers I have seen.

Dominic is next in line, and he has so much energy.  Dominic is the reason the show works so well.  He has quite a voice, and is an amazing Sax player.  I could listen to him every day.
Shawn is next, and wow!!  Shawn can dance.  He is a drummer and a tapper, and boy can this boy tap!  It’s incredible to watch him.

Mike comes next, and this boy can ROCK! He does an amazing version of “Danny Boy,” and also “Go Rest High.”  He sings both songs with so much love and passion that it really shines though.

Matt is back in the show more, and the fans will tell you that we are so very happy to see him there, front of the stage singing with the rest of the family.

Cat is next, the only girl in the family.  She is AMAZING!  There is true girl power when she is on stage.

Aaron brings up the rear, but it’s so hard to tell he’s the youngest.  He has grown up so much in the last couple years, he has really stepped up to do good things up front this year!
The Haygoods are one incredible family, and I would recommend them to ANYONE that is going to Branson. They appeal to any age group, and they use so much energy in their show, that you will leave the show wanting more.
Bender1215”

Dominic and Patrick accepted the award for the Haygood family and thanked the fans and Branson Critic for the award.  A whole second half of Christmas music followed - after which the fans brought the house down in appreciation for another fantastic show from the Haygoods!

Watch for the show in their new location next year at the Americana Theatre location.  Additional shows playing there will include Tony Roi and the Elvis Experience, Red, Hot, and Blue, and Cassandre!!  Branson Critic wishes all of them every success in their new venue!

BOB NELSON - Editors’ Choice, Best Specialty Show!

On 20 November 2008 seven members of the Branson Critic staff joined the audience of the Bob Nelson Comedy Show.  We made sure we were there in our seats early to catch the pre-show antics of “Grandpa.”  When Grandpa was done helping Bob with his pre-show managerial tasks he slipped behind the curtain.  At this point Chad Ray of Branson Critic was introduced to the audience and a hand holding a microphone came out from behind the curtain.  Chad went up on stage and took the microphone to explain Branson Critic was there.  Bob Nelson then came out and joined Chad as he explained to the audience what Branson Critic was and how the award nominations and selections were accomplished.  Chad then read some excerpts of fan and editor comments supporting Bob’s show for the Editors’ Choice Best Specialty Show Award:

A fan wrote:
“When I heard that Bob Nelson was coming to Branson, I was excited.  ‘I love stand up comedy……… and one thing that Branson doesn’t have a lot of is a full show of comedy…..’  I had seen (Bob) on HBO and Showtime years ago and always enjoyed his comedy skits that he performed.

“Bob was sick the first day I saw him…….he still put on a great show.  He apologized that he was not at his best but everybody thought he was great.  I went back close to the end of the season last year and he was “in top form.”  Bob was so funny that our faces hurt when we left.”   Keith Bradley, Arkansas

An Editor wrote:
“Remember the days when you could enjoy a good stand up comic and then be disappointed when his time was cut short?  In the last several years I’ve tried to enjoy stand up comedians but too many think the use of four letter words make their act funnier.   Nothing could be further from the truth.  What I do enjoy is good-clean-laugh-out-loud comedy and that’s what we have right here in Branson.

“After being featured on late night TV, Las Vegas, movies, comedy clubs, and his own HBO specials, etc., nationally known Emmy award winner, Bob Nelson, brought his kind of comedy to Branson.  In Bob Nelson’s show you get non-stop comedy for 70 - 75 minutes.  (Bob said he wrote this one!)

“When I took my son and his family to this show, they were nearly rolling on the floor laughing before the show ever started.  If you’re interested in a fun place to go where you will get non-stop laughter, you really should see the Bob Nelson Comedy Show.”  Bob Cort, Editor

Another Editor Quote:
“This show is clean, side-splitting comedy for every member of the family.  There is nothing else like it in Branson.  Bob, and the numerous characters of his creation, capture your full attention for the entire show, starting before the curtain opens.  Where else can you watch the creator of, Verbamime?”

SIX Wins BEST SHOW 2008!

Monday, November 17th proved to be an exciting day at The Hughes Brothers Theater. A large crowd was seated to watch the fantastic performance of the dynamic group SIX at 2:00pm.

Kevin, Barry, Lynn, Jak, Owen, and Curtis were in top form. The first half of the show was the regular performance that has been done throughout the season. The second half was all Christmas music. The audience was treated to the beautiful tight harmonies (who needs instruments?!), interaction between the brothers (and, at times, with members of the audience), comedy, and just superb entertainment.

During intermission, SIX was shown just how important they are to the fans. That was when Chad Ray, of BransonCritic.com was invited up on stage and presented The 2008 Best Show Award to the SIX Knudsen brothers. Chad explained to the audience what BransonCritic is all about and told how the various entertainers are decided upon each year to receive awards. He then read some select quotes from just a few of the fans who had sent in reviews.

“SIX is electric excitement and rhythm for the ears and eyes - high, bright, renewable energy from the first vibration to the last harmony. What you see is what you hear….the SIX brothers keep moving, dancing and posing……and you’ll know each one of the Knudsen brothers by the end of the show! Drums, trumpets, sax and more vocally reproduced sounds well up to fill the air…….while pulsating tempos keep their dancing sporty and sharp. Groovy humor rounds it out in this sophisticated “IN” show. You’ll lose weight dancing in your seat while all the time smiling and clapping. LINEDANCEB

SIX kicks acapella performance up to a whole new level. What they are able to do with their voices is nothing short of incredible. Back-up band? Who needs one! Their voices provide the entire drum, bass and rhythm needed.

Most importantly, they perform with love. Their love for each other, their families, and their audience shines through everything they do. Their humor is witty, charming and just plain fun - not to mention clean…….spontaneous, not rehearsed, and from the heart. They have so much fun on the stage, how could the audience not have fun with them? Impossible! Dtruth2
—————

SIX is my family’s favorite show in Branson. From the first time we saw the show, we fell in love with these hard working, dedicated performers. These young men provide a show that is above and beyond any we have seen. You can feel the love they have for their fellow man and for the veterans past and present. You feel the compassion and love they had for their mother and her dedication she had for them.

You only hear praise from other people around you - for their talents and crisp, clean, energetic movements during their performance. They are all unique in their own way. When you put all that talent together, it makes for a wonderful experience…they are a good example for our youth and young people today. They are a must hear and see group and are deserving of the title Best Show of the Year! Linda & Nancy from Oklahoma”
—————

The group graciously accepted the award and thanked their fans, Branson Critic, and the Hughes Family for hosting the venue.

After the Award presentation at intermission, the Award was given a place of honor during the rest of the show…on the fireplace mantle below the Christmas wreath.

It was particularly fitting that one of the audience members just happened to be Mr. Knudsen, who was able to watch proudly as his sons received the Award.
