The Winter Dance Party Tribute Show
Rave On! Taking Branson, Missouri by storm!
This
month’s column is about a tribute show I saw recently -- one
which left me and each day’s audiences “raving on” about how
fabulous it was! In fact, I’ll rave on even further and say
that this has to be one of the most enjoyable tribute shows
I’ve seen in years! I’d give it an A+ + for sure!
It was 45 years ago that the plane
carrying Ritchie Valens (age l7), Buddy Holly
(age 22), and J. P. Richardson, the Big Bopper (age 28),
crashed in Iowa. They were part way through their three-week
Winter Dance Party tour of the Midwest -- but it was
freezing cold and their unheated bus had engine problems, so
they decided to fly to their next venue. Sadly, they never
made it.
Click here to read more about the final days of the
legendary trio
and how their music has been passed to
each new generation, in part, by movies, stage productions,
and some very talented tribute performers.
The
Winter Dance Party
Tribute
tour made its debut in the winter of l999 -- 40 years after
that fateful plane crash. Now in its 6th year, it has a huge
fan following in the US. A world-class tribute to Buddy
Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, it re-creates much
of their final l959 tour -- traveling in the Midwest at the
same time of year as the original tour and playing in many
of the same still-remaining venues, including the Surf
Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, the site of the trio’s last
performance.
John Mueller,
who stars as
Buddy Holly, recalls:
“Dennis
Farland (tour organizer)
and I decided to re-trace the original tour's routing and
venues. We pooled our resources and, with great effort,
managed to pull it off, even though It exhausted us all
tremendously. I understood first-hand why Buddy would have
wanted to charter a plane and, here I was, traveling in a
cozy 15-passenger van! It was a grueling tour, and frigidly
cold. However, the fan support was so immense we decided to
do it again every year except with one major change: no more
touring in the exact geographical order of the original
tour. It's just too difficult.”
John
also recalls the highlights of that 40th anniversary tour:
“The Mayor of Green Bay, Wisconsin,
gave us the keys to the city! We had Niki Sullivan along
with us (Buddy's original Cricket rhythm guitar player), and
Ernie Valens (Ritchie's cousin). Robert Reynolds of the
Mavericks trekked with us and performed as well, as he's a
huge Holly fan.”
Since l999, the Winter
Dance Party tribute tour has become bigger each year, and
the band has grown as well. John reports that everything
runs more smoothly now, but it is still difficult touring at
that time of the year. To date, they have also raised over
$84,000. Scholarship funds have been developed, and money
donated to school music departments and various charities in
the names of Buddy, Ritchie and Bopper.
The cast has also evolved over the
years, and the current lineup features
John Mueller
as
Buddy Holly, Ray Anthony
as
Ritchie Valens,
and
J.P.
Richardson, Jr.,
as
the
Big Bopper.
Backed by the awesome
Winter Dance Party Band,
this is a
show not to be missed!
Rave On! Taking Branson,
Missouri by storm!
Recently John brought the WDP tribute
show to Branson, Missouri for the first
time, and there I caught up with the stellar cast at the
Branson Mall Music Theatre, as they took their audiences on
a nostalgic trip back to the '50's. I loved this energetic,
toe-tapping, hand-clapping, sing-along-to-the-songs show
which had the audience members (spanning several
generations) talking to each other, laughing, and smiling --
both throughout the show and afterwards as they met the
performers, had photos taken, and autographs signed. I was
also impressed with the calibre of talent displayed on the
stage and the high quality of the production.
And, for all those who
were too young to remember the original stars, this show
left us with a sense of their legacy -- who they were, and
how much they contributed to the early days of rock and
roll.
The
“California Kid,”
Ritchie Valens,
was portrayed by
Ray Anthony.
I’ve written about Ray Anthony before on LadyLuck and I
continue to be mesmerized by his talent. An accomplished
professional musician who plays guitar, bass, drums, and
piano, he’s also a singer, songwriter, and a superb tribute
impressionist. As Ritchie, he delivers an charismatic,
energetic, attention-getting performance. A born entertainer
and showman, Ray has the whole package: he can play, sing,
perform, entertain, and he has just the right look. His
phenomenal guitar solos were note for note “bang on” and I
thoroughly enjoyed his part of the show as he sang “Ritchie”
favourites such as
C’Mon Let’s Go, Oh
Donna, La Bamba, That’s My Little
Suzie,
mixing in some clever humour and audience participation, and
creating a romantic mood with the beautiful ballad,
You’re
Mine.
As always, he had the audience in the palm of his hand as he
performed. Ray truly is in a league of his own.
Ray has performed throughout North
America -- as both a musician and a tribute artist --
playing in 50's and 60's shows, Legends in Concert, A Really
Big Shew,
The Winter Dance Party tour, 50's At The Hop, and being a
part of the band in “Elvis shows” with the likes of Elvis’
own singers and musicians such as JD Sumner, The Stamps
Quartet, and DJ Fontana, whose respect he has deservedly
earned. Ray has also been highly endorsed by the Valens
family for his unparalleled portrayal of Ritchie, and you
can see why. They must be very proud.
Buddy
Holly
was portrayed with uncanny accuracy by
John Mueller.
John is an accomplished singer, songwriter, musician,
playwright and award-winning actor, who has appeared in many
stage productions, musicals, TV shows and movies. He has
also starred as Buddy Holly in the world stage premiere of
“Be Bop a Lula” in Hollywood, and he won a Drama Desk Award
and critical acclaim for his portrayal of Buddy in the North
American production of “Buddy....The Buddy Holly Story.”
John performs from time to time with Elvis tribute artists
and Roy Orbison impressionists -- in addition to performing
as “himself” and playing his own brand of 50's style
rock/pop/country music. See John’s website (listed below)
for his schedule of upcoming performances and much more.
John bears a remarkable resemblance to Buddy Holly on stage,
looking and
sounding
just like Buddy, and capturing his persona perfectly.
Watching him perform, I felt a sense of what the original
Buddy Holly must have really been like and it sent a shiver
down my spine. John’s musicianship is also phenomenal. He
has his guitar solos down note for note, and it was almost
as if the music had been lifted straight off the original
records. It was a real pleasure to listen to such accurate
renditions of all those wonderful Buddy Holly songs such as
That’ll Be the Day, Peggy Sue, True
Love Ways., Not Fade Away, Rave On, and It Doesn’t Matter
Any More.
I
also enjoyed meeting “superfan,” Amber, a 22-year old
college student who happened to be sitting next to me. She
knew all the words to all the songs and told me that her
grandparents in Texas were big Buddy Holly fans and that
she’d grown up listening to his music. She just loved the
show too, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to dance
on stage with "Buddy."
It’s no wonder that John Mueller has been highly endorsed by
Buddy’s widow, Maria Elena Holly, and by Buddy’s brothers,
Larry and Travis --quite an honour, as he is the only Buddy
Holly tribute artist to be so endorsed.
As John says about his and Ray Anthony’s endorsements from
the Holly family
and
the Valens family,
“They are thrilled that someone is out
there keeping this music alive.”
And speaking of family members! The third performer on the
bill was
Jay P. Richardson,
paying tribute to his father, the
Big Bopper.
Yes, Jay is the actual son of the original Big Bopper, and,
on stage, goes by the name ”Big Bopper Jr.” Jay, who was
born 84 days after his father died in the plane crash, is an
extremely likeable “cuddly teddy bear” of a man who
instantly endears himself to the audience. Jay previously
owned a nightclub called “The Little Bopper,” and used to
book rock and roll acts but, with his family resemblance and
his similar singing style, he was eventually convinced to
perform his own tribute to his father. Since then he has
performed with a number of rock and roll singers, including
Bobby Vee, Freddy Cannon, the Crickets, and the Drifters.
Jay’s
part of the show featured some great songs written by the
Big Bopper such as
Running Bear, White Lightnin’, Big
Bopper’s Wedding --
and he performed a wonderful version of the unforgettable
Chantilly Lace.
He also added in lots of humour, and then had us all choking
back tears as he sang a beautiful, sentimental song written
by his Dad called
Someone Watching Over You.
Watching Jay perform and listening to his anecdotes, I
learned much more about the talents and accomplishments of
the original Big Bopper than I’d known before, and all I can
say is that Jay does him proud and he’d be so proud of his
son!
As if all this wasn't enough, the three performers were
backed by the
Winter
Dance
Party Band.
This awesome band featured bass player, Ed “Too Tall”
Maxwell; guitarist Robby Vee (son of Bobby Vee, who was
chosen to fill in for Buddy Holly during the remainder of
the original l959 tour); Grammy nominee Slammin’ Sammy K on
drums; and musical director Mike Acosta on saxophone. Let’s
just say they're definitely not your typical nameless,
“blend into the woodwork” group of backup musicians! Each
one displayed his own distinct personality and each was
definitely part of the show. Ed, on bass, was “right on”
note for note -- and, visually, he was a show all by himself
at times! Robby, on guitar, caught my eye at first as he
looked so much like the young Elvis. In fact, I found myself
thinking he could easily be an Elvis tribute artist....until
it was announced that he was Bobby Vee’s son, and then I
immediately saw the family resemblance. An awesome guitar
player (did I detect
some
jazz stylings?) and a songwriter, Robby was sensational.
Slammin’ Sammy K on drums did double duty as MC, introducing
the other band members and each of the performers, adding
humour and showing us his awesome drumming ability, all the
while holding the band together with great flair. Mike
Acosta had a great look and great interplay with the rest of
the band -- and he had his saxophone wailing in the true
tradition of that instrument’s role in early rock and roll.
This band was absolutely entertaining -- not only musically,
but visually -- reminiscent also of the early rock and roll
era they were re-creating. To sum it up, they were smokin’!
This was one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve seen in years
...a happy, uplifting trip down memory lane, provided by a
cast of entertaining performers with superb talent and
musicianship. Kudos to all involved in this fine production.
And a footnote: One evening while I was still in Branson,
and attending another event, I bumped into two young men I’d
previously met in the audience at the Winter Dance Party
show. Both huge fans of early rock and roll, and one an
accomplished singer himself, they told me they hadn’t yet
stopped talking about how good this show was.
Be sure to see the Winter Dance Party tribute -- I guarantee
you'll rave on, too!
