John Tweed

A lot has happened to John Tweed in the past couple of years. John used to be on the other side of the world, Branson-wise. He used to be performing at a place called Planet Branson. John has since moved to the Caravelle Theater on the populated side of the planet and, having done so, has been a much happier camper.

OK more is happening with John Tweed and I will get to that in a moment. First of all, for those of you who are not familiar with John lets hit some of the basics. He is, without a doubt, the tallest performer in Branson. The man is at least 5’ 18”. I feel he gets taller each time I see him. Optical illusion, I suppose.

Secondly, he has a four octave vocal range. Let me put that into perspective. Johnny Cash, one of my all-time musical heroes and who pounded the cash-box charts for decades, had about a one octave range, at least that he used when singing. John Tweed can go from extremely high on the scale to as low as they go within the time it takes to rupture a larynx, or have a hernia. It is truly amazing to hear the range that the man has. Not only that, John has an extraordinarily fine voice as well.

James Cagney could sing. It amazed me, throughout my lifetime, every time I heard Jimmy sing Yankee Doodle Dandy. The “Dirty Little Rat” guy could actually dance and carry a tune and in that particular movie, and he did it well. So well, in fact, that he garnered an Oscar for his performance. The reason I brought Jimmy into play is simply that there are some singers who look like singers and you expect them to sing. Others like Cagney, are as far from looking or acting the part of singers as can be imagined. Cagney pulled it off and in the process, reserved his place to bask in the eternal sun of history. Want an interesting bit of trivia? The Hollywood “tough guy” Cagney’s first job as an actor was as a female impersonator. Who would a thought?

On the other hand, John looks the debonair, suave part of a singer and he definitely is. He does country, blues, oldies and Broadway. He is truly amazing in the breadth and depth of his musical abilities and his voice. You have to have the “Tweed Experience” to fully understand what I am saying. There are a couple of billboards around town advertising John as “The Voice.” They will never be sued for false advertising, because John Tweed can truly be called, “The Voice.” He has one of the finest and most talented voices anywhere on the face of this planet.

Now the other thing that is happening in John’s life. John and his wife Patty started a project a little over 16 years ago that is just now coming to full fruitation. Her name is Sarah and she is destined for much more than the popcorn sales she does now. I wrote last year about Pam Tillis filling her daddy’s shoes, I believe I can say the same thing about Sarah. During the show, Sarah duos with John performing the song, “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.” She is just possibly right. Sarah has learned her lessons well, very well. Sarah not only has talent to burn and a great voice, but she has stage presence that puts her on center stage no matter where she happens to be in the theater. Just her presence makes her noticed and then she sings. One word describes her performance, WOW!!!

When John finally decides to get a really big rocking chair for his front porch and take life easier, he will be resting well knowing that Sarah is in the drivers seat and keeping the Tweed legacy alive. Sarah is only 16 and she is already a formidable presence on stage. I wonder what she will be like when she approaches her 20th birthday. John is in for some serious competition in his own show.

John loves every moment of it and you can tell it by the look of pride and joy on his face. Sarah takes her talent with a grain of salt with no ego mixed in with it. It comes naturally for her and she takes it very much in stride, which is much to her credit. Guys, I don’t know if John would approve of me saying this, but, Sarah is a real looker too. She must get her looks from her dad, because her mom Patty still has hers.

John has a band that is made up of award winning musicians and between his guitar playing and the band, adding in his unique vocals and his daughter’s appearance, the show is a winner. A definite blue-ribbon winner.

Grab a couple of tickets and get over to see it. There are a few surprises in the show that I have not mentioned. You will not want to miss it. Believe me.
