PATSY CLINE REINCARNATED

My wife and I saw Lisa Layne’s show portraying Patsy Cline at Legacy’s Live Theater on 1 July 2006. We saw four shows that day and none of the others were of the same caliber as Lisa portraying Patsy Cline at four different venues in her career; early radio, first Grand Ole Opry appearance, Las Vegas, and Carnegie Hall. Lisa has the sound, inflection, and timing perfected as well as the narration between songs. It’s as if you were there in the audience at each of the venues. She even mentions her mother being in the audience, as she was for the Las Vegas show.

Lisa doesn’t look like Patsy Cline because of her long red hair but when she puts on the short black wig the resemblance is amazing. Her five-piece band also plays their part in the original style. At any point in the show, you don’t have to close your eyes to try to imagine, you can observe closely and critically and swear you are in one of Patsy’s live audiences. Her song selection and costume changes are appropriate for each time period in Patsy’s career. This seasoned performer needs a larger and better venue for her show.

We first saw her at the Jim Owen Show in June 2006. There she dressed for the part and did two of Patsy’s songs. Two other backup singers also performed their specialties (Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette) but Lisa had her specialty perfected; every word, every phrase, even her appearance and mannerisms. All three girls did an outstanding job of backup singing for Jim Owen, especially on the Eddie Arnold songs. There harmony was top notch.

We first saw Lisa’s show at Waltzing Waters and while her performance was fantastic, the theater was far too humid for the audience to be comfortable for the 2-hour show. The show at Legacy’s Live was also top notch but the audience had to sit on straight-back chairs for 1 ½ hours throughout the show. It didn’t bother me; I would have stood through the whole show if necessary. Each time my wife and I see the show, it just captures our whole attention and we get caught up in the original Patsy Cline era.

We’ve seen Tony Roi’s portrayal of Elvis and Tim Hadler’s portrayal of Hank Williams, Sr. They are both great shows and both entertainers do a fine job in their impersonations. Lisa Layne takes her portrayal of Patsy Cline a step further - she makes the audience believe that she is Patsy Cline, reincarnated.
