Darren Romeo: The New Face of Magic

Darren Romeo is definitely one of a kind. I can honestly say that I have never been more awe struck and mesmerized during a show. I have stayed away from the majority of Branson shows, even though I live nearby in Harrison, Arkansas. The main reason I have stayed away is because I have not been impressed by the shows lately. The ones I have been to have been incredibly cheesy and the talent has been less than mediocre. And heaven forbid that you approach one of the stars for an autograph, because they act like you are greatly inconveniencing them as they quickly jot down an autograph and move onto the next person like you were never there to begin with.

I had heard great things about Darren’s show, so I thought I would give it a shot. My mother and I decided to take a weekend get-a-way to Branson and go see his show. I was already disappointed when we ordered our tickets and the best seats they had were in the 20th row. I almost told the box office attendant to forget it, but she quickly assured me that there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. I am sure glad I didn’t pass this opportunity up.

As we took our seats, I immediately saw what the box office attendant was talking about. The theatre is set up perfectly to where there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. Even from 20th row, you could see the stage perfectly. To my utter surprise, I found myself getting extremely excited. They were playing haunting, enchanting music in the background, which I later found out were the melodies from Darren’s music. The entire atmosphere just added to my mounting excitement.

From the very beginning of the show, Darren had the entire audience, myself included, eating out of his hand. He opened the show by sitting in one lone chair on the stage, draping himself with a sheet, and within a blink of an eye, the sheet fell to the ground and he was gone. And while you are staring at the stage wondering “Where did he go?” He vividly pops up in the middle of the audience. Right then and there, I knew this wasn’t going to be your average show.

I think the most unique thing about the show is how he sings while doing his illusions. It adds to the mystery and mystique of the show. His voice and his whole stage presence is truly hypnotic.

Darren is constantly interacting with the audience, showing from the very beginning that his audience is of utmost importance for him.

At the end of the show, he invites everyone to meet him out in the lobby for autographs and pictures, which is truly a rarity in the entertainment industry. I was the first in line, and I felt like a love struck teenager all over again. I was actually prepared to just get my picture ripped out of my hands and thrusted back at me like what usually always happens. Boy, was I wrong. Darren smiled at me and introduced himself as he stuck out his hand to shake mine. I introduced myself as well, and told him how much I enjoyed the show. He looked me square in the eyes and smiled, profusely expressing his gratitude to me.

I then took a chance and asked him if I could take a picture with him. He smiled even wider and jumped up, then put his arm around me, proclaiming, “Sure thing!” I didn’t have a camera with me, so I had my mother take a picture of us with my cell phone. My mom isn’t really good with any form of technology, and the picture she took ended up cutting Darren’s head off in the picture. When I looked at it and told her what she had done, Darren cracked up laughing.

I was sure that his people were going to quickly usher me away because I had taken up more than my fair share of time with him. Darren put his arm back around and me and said, “Well hey, let’s take another one!” I then handed the phone to the guy standing with him, and asked him if he would take it instead of my mother. We took the picture and I thanked him before I left. I was completely mesmerized by his personality.

When I got home, I went to his official website to do some research on him. I came across a page where it had an email address where you could send letters to Darren. Of course, it had the usual disclaimer, saying that Darren couldn’t respond to each and every single email, but that he did read them. Even though I knew it was a long shot, I felt compelled to send him an email, letting him know how much he touched me.

At one point during the show, he was sitting on the steps of the stage talking to the audience. He began talking about how thankful he was for everything that was given to him. He then made a statement that will stick with me forever. He began talking about how you can take nothing for granted, especially the people in our lives. I know how true that statement is more than anyone, because I lost my father two years ago. I then began feeling tears in my eyes. Even though I knew he probably didn't have time to respond to a measly email, I just felt the need to email him my thoughts.

Here is what my email said:

Dear Darren,

I was at your show last night in Branson, Missouri, and I can easily say that I have never been to a show that left me feeling so alive inside.

It is a feeling that I have truly missed. I lost my father two years ago in a semi-truck accident, and I have been feeling lost and alone ever since. I often wonder why he was taken from me. I am only 25 years old, and I feel that my Daddy wasn't done raising me yet. There was so many things he had left to teach me. I feel that we were robbed of our time together.

Hearing you speak last night about how we cannot take anything for granted brought tears to my eyes, because I know more than anyone, how true that statement is.

I live near Branson, so I will definitely be coming to see you again sometime soon.

Thank you, Darren, for bringing magic before my eyes, and back inside of my heart.

Sincerely,
Melissa Morgan

As I was writing up this review, I got an alert that I had a new email. To my surprise, it was a response from Darren himself. I could hardly believe my eyes. Here is the reply from Darren:

Dear Melissa,

Your email was beautiful! I live to reach people in this way. I'm very glad the show filled your heart.

We will see you soon!

Best always,
Darren

Reading these words just confirms what an amazing and humble guy he is. Branson has acquired an amazing talent, but what is even more important, he is an amazing human being that truly and genuinely cares about his fans.

Darren Romeo deserves the award for “Best Performer” and “Best Show” hands down. I do not believe there is another artist in Branson that deserves these awards more than Darren.

Sincerely,

Melissa Morgan
