Mike Nichols and Friends
Heath Hawkins 7-29-06:
Being an experienced Ozarks traveler I
have seen my share of “Ozark” style shows. Branson has it's share of
shows that fall into this category, but there are other great shows
out there. One of my favorites has always been the Ozark Mountain
Hoedown in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I thought the comedian was one
of the funniest anywhere.
I have not been to Eureka Springs in some time, so I was not aware
that Mike Nichols, the comedian at the Hoedown had left. So when I
discovered that he was in Branson, my wife informed me that we would
be seeing him. He performs as the comedian in the Moe Bandy show and
he also has his own show in that theatre in the afternoon.
We
got tickets for his show on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 19,
2006. I had not ever been in this theatre. But know that is one of
the older ones, I was concerned that it would not be the greatest
experience. I was very pleasantly surprised. The theatre itself is
not huge, but the seating arrangement allows for lots of room.
Though I would not rank the seats as the best in Branson, they were
comfortable and there was plenty leg room.
I was a little taken back by the show opener. The band started with
a song called “Country Cookin.” Though good, I was not familiar with
the song. It just seemed odd that they would start out with a song
about food.
Mike Nichols came out next to introduce the very talented band of
singers and musicians. I am always amazed at the caliber of the
entertainers in Branson. What a blessing that they share their
talents with us. The Mike Nichols Band is no exception. They are
awesome.
I knew Mike as a comedian, but I was soon to find out that he also
has a top set of vocal chords. He sang “Liven Fast Forward” and I
knew that I would soon appreciate him for something besides his
jokes.
Throughout the afternoon the audience gets to here a lot more of
Mike’s great voice that seemed to be made for country music.
He also shared the vocals with others on the stage including Kaci
Bays. She has been with Mickey Gilley for 13 years. You do not make
it that long with one of the biggest names in Branson just by luck.
Her voice will blow you away. Mickey Gilley, also a friend of Mike,
was even in the audience that day to check out the show
and lend his support.
It did not take long before Mike delivered on what I was there to
see. His signature character, Tater Patches, was there to tickle the
funny bone. Tater is the janitor of the theatre and always seems to
find a reason to interrupt the show. This day he was there to raise
money to help his Grandpa buy some new chickens. Now I will not give
away the bit, but know that it involves a bare rear end and the cold
nose of a hound dog.
Next we meet Elvis. Live on stage at the Moe Bandy Theatre. This is
not the Elvis that the crazed Tony Roi come to see. Mike portrayed
Elvis as he was in the later years of his career. Lets just say that
the buttons and jewels of that costume could also qualify as deadly
weapons. He even serenades a lucky lady in the audience with songs
like: “CC Rider, My Temperatures Risen, and My Way.” Elvis fans,
this is a tribute you may never be able to forget, even if you want
to.
Finally
we meet Posture Pedic, another alter ego of Mike and a kin folk of
Tater Patches. He shares some of his camping tips with the audience.
Y will leave knowing how to identify bear droppings in a way you
will never forget. He even shares the reason that Indian women have
that red dot on their forehead. His words to live by are as
insightful at the most learned philosopher.
After intermission you are treated to an intimate session with Mike
and Kaci. The curtains remained closed and the two of the pulled up
a stool to sing a couple of duets. They also take the time to get to
know who is in the audience. You really get to hear how sincerely
thankful they are to be able to perform and make people happy for a
living.
After the up close and personal segment, the show moves into a
hilarious tribute to some of country music most loved duets. We
experienced Johnny and June Carter Cash, Whalen Jennings and Willie
Nelson, even Kenny and Dolly. You will never think of these
entertainers quite the same way again.
As the show drew to a close, there was of course the patriotic
close. He sings a song called “Here in
America.” It is also mostly a country rock song that was very
appropriate.
After leaving the show, Candi and I of course discussed our likes
and disappointments. I had hopped to see more of Mike’s character
comedy in the second half. All his characters appeared in the
opening. Candi, on the other hand, thought the second half was the
best. Guess it just goes to show that we all have our opinions. But
we both agreed that Mike has to be one of the funniest guys around.
That means a lot in a town of very funny comedians.
Whether you are a fan of great classic country music or roll in the
floor comedy, you will leave happy from the Mike Nichols and Friends
Show. If you are looking for glamore and glitter, you will not find
it here. Just a great polished show full of entertainment value.
On top of putting on a great show, he and the full band and cast are
just nice people. They will stick around as long as you want to talk
and sign autographs. There is nothing better that enjoying the
talent on stage, then finding out how appreciative they are of their
fans.
Mike Nichols & Friends is performed at the Moe Bandy Theatre. The
theatre is right across the road from Wal-Mart, so you will have no
problems finding it. The show is performed in the 2:00 p.m. time
slot throughout the season. For more information, reservations or a
show schedule call the theatre at (417) 334-5333. Tell them that
